Why dating feels exhausting (and how to make it better)

Are you feeling exasperated by the whole dating process? Have you been on a few dates with someone, expecting things to go somewhere, only to be ghosted or hit with the dreaded “we’re not a match” message? Are you tired of bland or offensive messages on dating apps that never go anywhere?

You are not alone!

But here’s something important: You have more control over your dating experience than you think.

Reframe Your Approach to Dating

First, understand that dating is just a process—a process of getting to know people. That’s it. If you don’t like the person you’re getting to know, you can exit the situation without hesitation. And guess what? They can too, and that’s okay!

If you’re getting rude or uninteresting messages on a dating app, stop engaging. Responding to those who aren’t worth your time only adds to your frustration. If someone sends you a rude or overly sexual message, don’t waste energy explaining why that’s inappropriate—it’s not your responsibility. Just unmatch and move on. No explanation required.

It’s Not Always About You

If you’ve had a few good dates with someone and it doesn’t move forward, that doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong. It could mean a lot of things—very few of which have anything to do with you. Dating is about discovering potential, not making promises.

If someone decides not to keep dating you, that’s not a reflection of your worth. They might not have felt the connection they were seeking, or perhaps they’re taking a break from dating. Maybe they have other personal responsibilities, like caregiving. The point is: dating isn’t about being chosen by someone; it’s about being yourself and finding a mutual connection.

Take Control and Enjoy the Process

By reframing your view of dating, you’ll find it becomes easier and even more enjoyable. Instead of focusing on whether someone will continue to choose you, focus on whether you enjoy spending time with them. You deserve a relationship that excites both people equally.
